“What if I died tomorrow?” | Living each day as if it were your last
Leaving behind a piece of your legacy each day as if you won’t see tomorrow
I get asked often about my perspective on career and life.
Specifically on building a life that is full of purpose and passion. One that has motivation and get out of bed and attack the day. A life that is full of joy, happiness and inner peace.
Let me be real for a moment.
I don’t wake up motivated every day. I don’t feel an overwhelming sense of happiness and peace each day. I seldom feel any of those things if at all.
Yet — I find myself working toward my purpose every day.
At some point it became popular to sell a dream to pursue happiness, follow your passion, and break away from tradition and then maybe you will wake up motivated to attack the day.
I don’t agree that this is the highest, best use of our life.
To build a life full of purpose and passion I believe it takes a legacy based approach to your work, relationships, and action, regardless of your current circumstance.
A legacy based approach means leaving behind work, resource, and impact that lives beyond your human existence.
If I died tomorrow — what would I leave behind?
It’s not about being the biggest, or best in the world. Most of us won’t be that.
Yet, we have so many in our circle that love us and look to our voice for inspiration, encouragement, or support.
Start that thing you’ve always wanted to, meet new people, share your work with the world, regardless of the end result.
Each day I focus on writing and sharing stories and my thoughts. Adding my personal taste with my micro influence in music. Creating through my career in tech or with Believe Brand. Posting one thing that can be found online or in person that shares my experiences. Some large productions, others, small pieces like this blog.
Over the years I’ve seen the works pile up creating a portfolio that shares who I am and what I enjoy with the world.
I am confident that if I died tomorrow my loved ones would always be able to hear my voice, find my work, learn a bit about who I am. My consistent investment in sharing who I am without regard of judgement or criticism, focused on building a platform that my community can be proud of and accept as their own.
I think you should too — because you have unique gifts and perspectives that the world would miss if you were no longer here.
That is how I stay disciplined each day.
I am seldom motivated.
I am committed to a process to leave a legacy and provide as much value as I can before God calls me home.
